Electrics Keep Tripping? A Winter Guide for Warrington Homes
It's dark by half four, the heating's on, the outside lights are going up – and then the whole house goes off. If your electrics keep tripping in Warrington this winter, you're not on your own. Cold, wet weather and heavier use are a common trigger for trip switches that won't stay up.
This guide covers what's actually happening when your consumer unit trips, the safe checks you can do yourself, and when it's time to get an electrician out. We're Evans Electrical Services, an NICEIC registered firm based in Weaverham, covering Warrington (WA1–WA5) including Stockton Heath, Latchford, Grappenhall, Lymm and Penketh.
Why Your Electrics Trip: RCD or MCB?
Open your consumer unit (fuse box) and look at what's dropped. There are two main types of switch, and they trip for different reasons.
The RCD (usually a wider switch with a "T" test button) is watching for current leaking to earth. That's what happens when water gets into a fitting, an appliance has an internal fault, or a cable is damaged. One RCD often covers several circuits, which is why half the house can go off at once.
An MCB (the narrower switches, one per circuit) trips when a circuit is overloaded or has a short circuit. If just the kitchen sockets or the upstairs lights have gone, it's usually an MCB.
Some newer boards use RCBOs, which do both jobs for a single circuit. If one RCBO trips, only that circuit goes off – which makes finding the fault a lot easier.
If you've got an old board with a wooden back, rewireable fuses or no RCD protection at all, that's a different conversation – see the section on old fuse boards below.
Why It Gets Worse in Winter
Tripping isn't random. In winter, the usual causes are:
- Water in outside fittings. Garden sockets, outside lights, garage supplies and shed cables take a battering from the rain. Once moisture gets in, the RCD sees the leakage and trips – often at night when it's coldest and dampest.
- Christmas and outdoor lights. Cheap outdoor lights, indoor lights used outside, and extension leads left on wet patios are a classic cause of trips through December.
- Heaters and overloaded sockets. Plug-in oil heaters, fan heaters and tumble dryers all running on the same circuit can push it past what it was designed for. That's an MCB trip, not an RCD one.
- Immersion heaters and kettles. Elements fail and start leaking to earth. They get used more when it's cold, so they tend to show up now.
- Damp in older properties. Condensation in lofts, cellars and garages can find its way into old junction boxes and fittings.
Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself
Before you ring anyone, there are a few safe things you can try. Don't take covers off anything and don't touch anything that's wet, hot, smells of burning or has visible damage.
- Unplug everything. Switch off and unplug every appliance in the house – not just switched off at the wall.
- Reset the switch. Push the tripped RCD or MCB back up.
- Plug things back in one at a time. Wait a minute between each. If it trips when you plug something in or switch it on, you've probably found your faulty appliance. Leave it unplugged.
- Check outside. If it only trips at night or when it's raining, an outside socket, light or garage supply is the likely culprit.
- Try switching circuits off. With the RCD up, if your board allows it, turn the individual MCBs off and back on one by one to see which circuit makes it trip.
Stop and call an electrician if:
- The switch trips instantly every time you reset it, even with everything unplugged
- You can smell burning, see scorch marks, or hear buzzing from the board or a socket
- A socket, switch or plug is hot to the touch
- The fault is on a fixed circuit like lighting, the shower, cooker or immersion and you can't isolate it
Don't keep resetting a switch that won't stay up. It's tripping for a reason, and forcing it back on repeatedly isn't safe. Never tape or wedge a switch in the "on" position.
When It's an Old Fuse Board
A lot of homes in Warrington still have older consumer units, or even rewireable fuses, with no RCD protection on some or all circuits. Those boards may not trip at all on an earth fault – which is the more worrying problem.
The current wiring regulations (BS 7671) require 30mA RCD protection on most socket circuits in new work. If your board doesn't have it, an upgrade is worth thinking about. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, so it needs to be done by a registered electrician who can certify and notify it.
Our consumer unit upgrades in Warrington typically start from £650 + VAT for a board change with full testing and certification. More detail is on our consumer unit replacement cost page.
What a Fault-Finding Visit Involves
When the simple checks don't sort it, the fault is usually somewhere you can't see: a damaged cable, a failing fitting, a wet junction box or a neutral-to-earth fault between circuits. Finding it takes test equipment and a methodical approach.
On a fault-finding visit, we:
- Find out which circuit is tripping and under what conditions
- Insulation-test the circuits to find where current is leaking
- Track the fault down to the fitting, cable run or appliance
- Repair it, or quote for the repair if it's a bigger job
- Test the circuit before we leave
Our standard call-out is £85 + VAT for the first hour (including travel), then £50 + VAT for each extra hour. We work hourly on fault finding because nobody can tell how long a hidden fault will take until it's found – and we'll explain the cost before we start. We aim to trace and fix the fault on the same visit where possible, but if we find a wider problem – like a circuit that needs rewiring – we'll explain it and put the quote in writing so you can decide.
Need an Emergency Electrician in Warrington?
If you've lost power to the whole house, can't get the RCD to stay up, or there's any sign of burning or heat, treat it as an emergency. Our emergency call-outs are £120 + VAT for the first hour, then £70 + VAT for each extra hour, agreed before we travel. Ring and we'll tell you honestly when we can get to you.
You can find out more about the area we cover on our Warrington emergency electrician page, or our main Warrington electrician page.
Landlords: Don't Ignore a Tripping Report
If a tenant reports tripping, don't leave it. A recurring trip is often a fault that would show up as a C2 or FI on an EICR. Getting it fixed now is cheaper than dealing with it as an urgent remedial later. Our EICRs in Warrington start from £175 Inc VAT for a 1-bed property, with remedial work quoted separately in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my RCD keep tripping at night?
At night it's colder and damper, so moisture builds up in outdoor sockets, lights and garage supplies. Timed appliances like immersion heaters and dishwashers also often run overnight. If it only trips at night or in wet weather, an outside fitting or an appliance on a timer is the likely cause.
Is it dangerous if my electrics keep tripping?
The trip itself is the safety device doing its job. The fault behind it can be dangerous, though – especially if it trips immediately every time, or there's any heat, burning smell or scorch marks. If resetting doesn't hold, or you see any of those signs, stop and call an electrician.
How much does it cost to find a tripping fault in Warrington?
Our standard call-out is £85 + VAT for the first hour including travel, then £50 + VAT per extra hour. Emergency call-outs are £120 + VAT for the first hour, then £70 + VAT per hour. If the repair is bigger than the visit – like a consumer unit upgrade, typically from £650 + VAT – we'll quote it in writing first.
